I was thinking: Some manufacturer needs to put a car on the market with an 11-speed transmission. That way they can advertise that this car goes up to 11.
Obviously, it w ould need to use a dial shifter. Maybe options for automatic or sequential manual. The automatic could have one dial for PRND plus a manumatic setting at the end, and a second dial to shift when you’re in manual mode. The sequential would have a single large dial in the same spot because you have to use it more, with 0 for neutral and -1 for reverse.

But why not just make the existing 10 gears better ?

Let me get my pitchfork sharpened up here. How many times do we need all these gears? I’m in a rented 2019 Camry this week (8 speed auto). It seems to only use 4 gears. What’s the point of all the gears? Driving normally, it seems to start in 4th every time. Might as well be a 4 speed if we are going to do that. If I floor the accelerator from a dead stop it seems to hesitate and shift before it launches. I can’t tell what gear it leaves the line in during these conditions.
Are all these gears a pi** ing match between manufacturers to have some number on a spec sheet? I guess with more gears, they could, in theory, keep the engine in the best place for power and fuel economy, but other than manually shifting to 1st, there’s no way to tell the car you are about to try and get a 0-60 and quarter mile time to complete against an Accord.

Why don’t you make 9th taller, then when you need that extra push just go to 10?

I’m afraid your joke is probably referencing a movie which has become a bit too old for random references with no explanation.

I went to a polaris training course last week and the rep was showing off the STAGE 5 OMG Rockford fosgate stereo in the new RZR, and he goes “Now the cool thing about this stereo is that it actually goes to 11". I was the only one who laughed at that.
My neighbors address is also 11 and his mailbox says "This one goes up to 11"

The only real rea so n you need umpteen gears is to get slightly better fuel consumption in standard test cycles, and arguably on the road, and to scrape a few seconds off your R ing time by keeping it at the top of the power band when in maximum attack . With modern turbo engines having all the torques from just above idle, most eve ry day users would get alo ng just fine if we went back to three on the tree.

Do you know why it has all those gears? So you can stick it in the idiot manual mode (M+/- = garbage) drop it 4-5 gears at a stop (because they always start in 4th???) and then slap it violently through gears 1-37 while the trans struggles to not be 3 steps behind. Feels good.

agreed - clearly a case of diminishing returns. My butt engineering degree says 6, maybe 7 speeds for a really powerful car looking for top end , is optimum.for an auto box.

As an owner of a truck with 10 speeds, I would be fine with an 11th gear. I didn't think I'd like so many gears until I got our truck. It's not the smoothest or smartest transmission, but it is quick and effective when you romp on it.

But shouldn’t we all have CVTs and do away with this obsolete gear nonsense? Or maybe just direct drive electric motors?

The ZF 8 speed is damn near perfect.
My 7 speed uses 4 or 5 around town at most. Starts in 2nd ( because every Mercedes slushbox ever does that) and the 1: 1 is 5th with 2 overdrive gears on top of that.

I do respect the CVT option - I own one. I love being able to cruise along at 70 running 1600 rpm with a tiny 4cyl motor. But, they just have not demonstrated they can successfully handle larger power output. And there are still many people that simply don’t like them, (they take getting used to and just do not feel sporty.) And just for the record - I would love one of the direct drive electric Tesla coupes (assuming they make it to market.) That “I can f’n blow the doors off anything on the planet” capability is very appealing. I just need to win the lottery.

Seems like so many things seem like such grand ideas, but then end up being such a disappointment.
per usual, we don’t know who they were, or what they were doin’.

Electric drive (without stored energy) is just an expensive and inefficient way of creating a CVT though
. It’s used on large v
ehicles because it copes well with high power outputs, not because it’s efficient
.
